Margaret Chase and Ethan Wyatt, mystery authors and sworn enemies, get a mysterious invitation to spend Christmas with “their biggest fan.” When they arrive at their destination, Eleanor Ashely’s house (the greatest mystery writer of all time), things start looking up. But then Eleanor disappears. From a locked room. In the middle of the night.

I don’t know why, but I didn’t go into this one with the highest expectations. I was wrong. Very wrong. This book was so good. It was definitely way more romance heavy than the other whodunit mystery’s I’ve read lately, and it’s exactly how this book needed to be written. I loved it. I love a good enemies to lovers AND he falls first story. There’s not a lot of ways that could go wrong for me. Ethan was so smug and charming but also so sweet. I loved how much he pined for Margaret (in the best way), and the things he’d say… they melted my heart. They were almost up there with some of the things Roman C Kitt (Divine Rivals) would say. And as far as Ethan helping Margaret trust herself and her instincts again… yes. Beautiful. Almost too much, but not quite.

I loved the format of the book and how we got to jump back in time to see Margaret growing up, her marriage falling apart, and her first meeting with Ethan. It was a really nice touch to understanding the current timeline. As far as the mystery goes, it was great. Another good whodunit with all of the suspects snowed into a mansion over Christmas. I didn’t see it coming. I liked all the investigating, clue finding, and how everything wrapped up. Essentially, I really really liked this book. I just wish it was lower on the spice scale. It was almost perfect.

Maybe 3/5 Christmas trees on our scale of Christmas spirit. Or 3.5. There was lots of discussion of Christmas as well as parties, gifts, Christmas day, and snow storms. But, Margert and Ethan bonded over their hatred of Christmas, and they were trying to solve a crime… and not die.

The Most Wonderful Crime of the Year was a really fun book to read. I was immediately sucked in by the questions I had about one of the main character’s past, and shortly after that, I was hooked by the mystery.  I loved the dynamic of our two main characters’ relationship. At first, I wasn’t too sure about Ethan, just like Maggie. But the more we learned about him, the more I liked him. Their banter was great, especially in the second half of the book. I loved the way Maggie and Ethan’s past experiences were woven throughout the story. The layout and timing of the chapters were perfect. I think certain questions were answered at just the right time. The plot twists kept me guessing the whole way through.

This story definitely gives Clue vibes. It reminds me of stories like Knives Out or Murder on the Orient Express. Several of the characters in this story were authors and it was really fun to read their thoughts in relation to literature and common tropes they use in their stories. I loved the mystery/romance combination. I need more books like this in my life.

I liked Christmas as the setting of this story, but it didn’t feel overly Christmassy to me. I feel like the story was more focused on the mystery and I would be randomly reminded it was Christmas by a description of festive decorations or the serving of eggnog. I would probably give it a 2.5/5 for Christmas Spirit. The focus of this story was definitely the mystery, not Christmas cheer. I wouldn’t change that though. I liked it as it was.

I love me a good murder mystery so after my sisters were raving about this one, I was excited to check it out. Especially with it being Christmas themed! This book was very much like a clue game, and I enjoyed the fact that they were both mystery authors trying to solve a real life mystery. It was a fun element to have in this story.

I found it to be quite adorable that Ethan had remembered Maggie from the elevator all those years ago. I also found it tragic that she didn’t remember him and didn’t get his little joke of calling her the wrong name all the time! So sad.

Overall, this was a cute and entertaining mystery read. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a Christmas mystery!
