After Iris Winnow’s brother decides to join the war, she’s forced to drop out of her last year of high school to get a job at the local paper. Iris starts writing letters to her brother, only they never reach him. Roman Kitt, Iris’s rival at the paper, ends up with them… and then he starts writing back.
I had high expectations for this book, but it was even better than I hoped it would be. I immediately got caught up in the world and became attached to Iris and Roman. I love anonymous letter writing situations, and I love enemies to lovers. So, this really was the best of both worlds. This book is definitely heavier on the romance than some other fantasy books I’ve read, but I’m not mad about it. At all. The side characters were also handled well, and I was interested in the war between two gods and how the mortals got dragged into fighting for them. I also love the name of the book and how it’s used and referenced multiple times throughout the book. It’s really fitting, and I appreciate it. This is part one of a duology, so I was expecting a cliff hanger, but it kind of made me mad. Everything’s a mess now, so I guess I’ll just have to read the next book sooner rather than later (not that I was gonna wait that long anyways).

Divine Rivals was such a good book! I went into it only knowing that my sister loved it, several BookTubers loved it, and that it was a fantasy novel. I have to admit it felt a little slow at first. I kept thinking, “this is the story that everyone loves?” It was making me sad and it wasn’t at all the vibe I was expecting, so I was a little skeptical. But the more I read, the more I could see it. This book is amazing! The writing in this story was absolutely beautiful. I don’t know that I’ve ever read anything like it. The author is incredibly talented. I’ve never tabbed so many quotes in a book! Long quotes too. The story was emotional, yet funny at times. I grew to care for the characters and the situation they were in broke my heart. I loved Iris and Roman’s sense of humor, especially when interacting with each other. I would argue that this is one of the most romantic books I’ve ever read. And that Roman C. Kitt is the most romantic character ever created! The things Roman does for Iris had me swooning. I don’t want to give away too many details of the story, just know that it really is a good book! There was an intimate scene in the story, but I’ll say that it was very well written. It wasn’t descriptive or graphic in any way, more a moment of two souls coming together. But it does happen on the pages. For that reason, I would say this is a book for a more mature audience. I highly recommend you check out Divine Rivals! I haven’t stopped thinking about it since I finished it.

CONTENT RATING
LANGUAGE

There’s minimal swearing throughout the book. One S word.
VIOLENCE/GORE

There is a fair amount of descriptive fighting and killing. There’s a war going on and the main characters end up in the middle of it.
SPICE

There is a male/female relationship throughout the book. They make out a few times and do become intimate with each other. It’s not closed door, but it is very vague. There’s also a female/female relationship where they kiss a few times.
