Letters of Enchantment #2
RUTHLESS VOWS

Little Sister

It’s been two weeks since Iris returned home from the war front with Forest. She’s been keeping up with work and doing everything she can to try to find Roman who was lost behind enemy lines. Roman wakes up with no memory of his past. He has no choice but to roll with what’s happening and start writing for the enemy.
I loved this book. A lot. It picks up two weeks after the end of the first book and gets right back into the mess of everything that happened. I hated the separation between Iris and Roman but it made the moments where they could see each other, or even just write to each other, so much sweeter. I was slightly concerned that there were going to be major problems in their relationship or questions about whether their marriage was a little too hasty. But I had nothing to worry about, and I really appreciated their commitment to each other and the vows that they made. It was a fun perspective to get to read from.
I also liked how every character got the attention that they deserved. It was fun to see love interests for Attie and Forest (I have really mixed feelings about him after the end of the first book, but whatever…). And it was good to see Marisol and Keegan again. My only question was whether I was supposed to know who Shane (Lieutenant for Dacre) was or not; did we see him in the first book? After finishing the book, I would say no, but why did it sorta seem like I should have?
I enjoyed following the progression of the war and being able to see things from Dacre’s side instead of just Enva’s (like the first book). I kind of have some problems with Enva though. I don’t really think she’s as amazing as some parts of the book make her out to be, and I was a bit concerned about whether she should be trusted or not. Despite all that, I still really liked the book. I just have one more thing to say: Where can I find myself a Roman C. Kitt?

I was very eager to continue reading Iris and Roman’s story in Ruthless Vows, especially considering how the ending of Divine Rivals had me wanting to throw my book through a window… (actually my sister’s book…) I had to know what happened to Iris and Roman!
I stand by my previous statement that Roman Carver Kitt is the most romantic character. How can we not love him and his devotion to Iris? I loved the letter writing between him and Iris in the beginning of the book and I wish there was more of that. I loved the full circle moment as they wrote back and forth “anonymously.” I loved how brave, bold, and inspiring Roman and Iris were. They would do anything for each other. Nothing mattered without the other. I actually thought it was a beautiful portrayal of a marriage. There was so much I loved about this story!
There are things that left me with more questions than answers when it came to the plot line though. What’s up with these gods? And this war they think they need to wage? It seemed to be a little extreme. I kept waiting for some twist or major revelation that would explain their behavior a little more but that never came. So, the whole war–the death and destruction–felt a little senseless to me. It was fairly entertaining to read, it’s just that if I think about it too hard, I’ve got a lot of questions… I wasn’t convinced Enva was the good god. She seemed shady to me.
I highly recommend reading this duology. The writing is amazing! The author is so talented. The side characters were great. The jury’s still out on Forest for me, but I digress. I loved how the chapters in this book had names. It seems like so many books just use numbers or characters names for POV for their chapters so it was fun to have a chapter name hinting at what takes place in the next pages. Not sure I’ll recover anytime soon, so wish me luck finding another book to read.
