When Damon has to take a work trip to Vegas, he and Jack (Jacklyn) decide to make a vacation out of it. Only the “work trip” turns out to be a little more dangerous than just pushing around some papers.
After reading the description on the back of the book, I was a little concerned and not necessarily thrilled with the idea of reading about Jack and Damon’s relationship being “stuck in a rut,” as it says. But I was pleasantly surprised when I started reading the book. I must have a different definition of “stuck in a rut” than the author does—and that really worked out for me. Their relationship was going strong after 8 months, and Jack was just concerned because she hadn’t gotten a ring yet, let alone an “I love you.” But if you read the first book, A Date with Danger, (which I would highly recommend before reading this one), then you might agree with me when I say his actions probably speak louder than his words. I really loved some of the parts of this book: the glimpse of their life before they left on vacation, Jack meeting Damon’s family, and all of the other moments when they weren’t pretending to be other people. This was a fun mystery, but I kind of wish we got some more of that other stuff.
Anyways…this book started out good, but then we got that annoying chapter that was a little wordy and didn’t really seem all that necessary to the plot, like in the first book. I’m starting to notice a pattern with this author. This chapter was all about the background of the case they got roped into working on, but I think that information could have been given to Jack, and the reader, in a different way. After that, the pace picked up and I was thoroughly intrigued. Of course, there were some petty things that made me mad: Jack and Damon’s fight, Damon consistently commenting on how beautiful Jack looked when she was dressed up as somebody else (and could barely recognize herself in the mirror), and Damon deciding to have a very important heartfelt conversion in the middle of a nightclub when they could have been caught (not acting like their undercover characters) at any moment and killed. That last one really hurt me…it could have been done in such a better way. But despite all of that, I liked the book and enjoyed reading it. I think A Date with Danger was better, but I would still recommend this one.
*While this book is technically not part of a series, I would highly recommend reading A Date with Danger first.
