A few months after the end of The Naturals, Agent Sterling shows up at the house to try to get the Naturals program ‘back on track.’ But with one change comes many more, and the Naturals end up involved in another active murder investigation: a case where the killer seems to be copying a famous serial killer from the area—Dean’s dad.

At the beginning, I was really intrigued about the mystery and how everything was connected to Dean’s dad. I was excited to get more information about Dean and his past, which I got, but I kind of wish there was a little bit more. I just finished the second book in the series, and I still feel like I don’t know the characters as well as I should. It made sense for the first book to be fairly surface level because Cassie was just meeting these people, but it’s been months and they’ve been through multiple traumatic experiences together. Maybe it’s just me, and maybe I’m being a little too greedy in wanting more.

That also goes for the romance subplot. I was kind of just annoyed by it because it wasn’t going anywhere. I could have taken more or less, but not this weird in between. Neither Michael nor Dean deserved the months that Cassie made them wait for her to decide between them. And it was a big thing, but also not at the same time. I don’t know. In case you're curious, my The Summer I Turned Pretty comparison still stands for the first book, but not this one. Michael has far surpassed Jeremiah and Dean is just… Dean.

All that being said, I still really enjoyed this book. I like the Naturals (though I wish I loved them) and I’m happy I grew fonder of Briggs, Sterling, and especially Judd as we went along. I enjoyed the mystery even though it was slightly ridiculous we were having the same argument as we did in the last book the whole time—the Naturals not supposed to be working on active cases but becoming involved in one. But then, the ending got me again. I thought for sure I knew how things were going to play out this time. I thought I saw it coming. Nope. Plot twist. Multiple plot twists. It was great. I love it when I get fooled by a book and I’m looking forward to reading the next one.
