Mordecai Tremaine #4
IN AT THE DEATH
FRANCIS DUNCAN

2.5 Stars
Mordecai Tremaine tags along with his friend, Jonathon Boyce, on the murder investigation of a doctor.
This book was slow. And coming in after reading So Pretty a Problem, which I thoroughly enjoyed, I was pretty disappointed. I just didn’t really care about the story, and maybe that’s a me problem. Maybe I wasn’t paying enough attention at the beginning to become invested. This also played out like a normal investigation—there were no time jumps/flash backs, and Mordecai had no personal interest in the murder. From the other books in the series that I’ve read, he usually stumbles his way into being involved in the murder/being friends with the victim and suspects. I think I like that style more than him just “working” a case with his friend.
That being said, the pace really started to pick up about 70% through, and I couldn’t put the book down. I needed to know what happened. I really enjoyed the ending and how things wrapped up.
