Rob’s life is turned upside down after his dad is caught embezzling money. If that isn’t bad enough, his dad also attempted to kill himself, leaving him completely reliant on Rob and Rob’s mom to take care of him. Meagan got caught cheating on the SAT, and her family keeps piling secrets on her. Rob and Meagan get paired up for a class assignment. Will they learn to trust/rely on each other?

After reading both Letters To The Lost and More Than We Can Tell, I was super excited to see that Brigid Kemmerer had another contemporary book. I hate to say it, but this one isn’t gonna be my new favorite. It had the potential to be amazing, but I feel like it missed the mark.

The book goes between Rob and Maegan. Rob is dealing with the aftermath of his dad being caught embezzling pretty much the entire town's money. The main theme throughout the book is that everyone thinks Rob knew what his dad was doing and was in on it. Rob hates that everyone thinks he was stealing, but yet, what does he do? He starts stealing! The story tries to make it into a Robin Hood situation, where he is taking from the rich to give to the poor, but, in my eyes, it still misses the point. If he really wanted to show he wasn’t just like his father, he should have never stooped to the level of stealing. The temptation and turmoil over stealing felt right for the character, but I was severely disappointed in him when he actually did it.

Then we have Maegan who cheated on the SAT. I feel like we never really got a good answer as to why she felt the need to cheat. The book mentions that she didn’t want to disappoint her family, but, as her best friend points out in the book, she was in multiple AP classes. She was going to rock the SAT, so why cheat?

Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoyed reading this book. I was just annoyed at the choices the characters were making. I still love Brigid Kemmerer books, and I might have to try one of her fantasy books, even though fantasy is not my favorite…
