Matilda, the god of messages, is half Underling and half Skyward. As a child living in the under realm, she’s easily underestimated and set aside. Then she discovers a mortal boy has befriended her in his dreams, and she does what she can to see him in real life. But when Vincent pleads for her help, and she’s nowhere to be found, he sure doesn’t forget it. 13 years later Matilda climbs up a tower and through his bedroom window to deliver a message to him.

Wow! That was crazy! From the very first page, I was invested in the story and the characters. I really really loved Matilda and Vincent as kids. They were so adorable. But I did have a little bit of trouble staying invested after the first section was over and we had the 13-year time jump. I was kind of upset with the total change in plot (it felt like, but not really), and it took a while for me to come to grips with the people Matilda and Vincent grew to become. But I quickly got over it.

I loved Matilda and Vincent (although he’s no Roman C. Kitt). I loved Nathanial. I loved Bade. I even cared for Vincent’s people and his land (after some time). I was slightly concerned that the storyline was going to be too much war for me, but the way everything played out, with all of the other elements added in, was very nice. And the ending was crazy. I do wish that we had gotten a little bit more from the ending though. To say it without giving anything away, I wish that we got to see more characters’ reactions to the ending other than Matilda and Vincent.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book despite the slow moments about 30-40% through. I hope Rebecca Ross keeps writing books in this world. I’m petitioning for Bade’s story next.
