WHY WE LOVE (AND HATE) TWILIGHT

This book is about all of the good and bad things of the Twilight Saga. It takes a deep dive into Twilight’s themes, characters, movies, fandom, controversies, influence, and much more. It’s “everything you wanted to know about Twilight (and more!)”

I flew through this book and thoroughly enjoyed it. I wouldn’t say I’m the biggest Twilight fan, but I’m not a hater either. I was fascinated by every little detail Gallagher brought up, and I can’t tell you how many times my jaw dropped or I literally laughed out loud. I love Gallagher’s sense of humor; I completely understand when she refers to her love language as “hating on what I love just a little bit.” Some of my favorite moments include never referring to Renesmee (the demon spawn) by her real name and the fandom headcannons, especially the one about Carlisle being the iceberg that sank the Titanic. On a more serious note, the discussion on Bella never having to deal with any consequences for her actions was very interesting and something I’d never thought about before.

I was, however, completely appalled by Gallagher stating that her favorite Twilight book and movie is New Moon. Really? She calls herself an “unfortunate Edward fan” and she loves New Moon which Edward is only in for 5 minutes? To each their own. I will say though, that after reading Jacob’s chapter, I’m a little bit more fond of him than I was before. I was also slightly annoyed by the placement of the pull quotes in the book. I think it’s a great idea to have them, but they were never underneath the paragraph they were pulled from. I would finish a paragraph and read a quote from five pages back that didn’t really pertain to the subject anymore.

This book is really humorous and fun, but it does talk about some heavy topics: everything from misogyny and racism to pedophilia. Gallagher takes a look at things from the perspective of the 2025 world instead of the 2008 world, when a lot of these issues were glossed over. That being said, enjoy the fun while also understanding that if some of these underlying themes and situations were real, they would be quite problematic (and not just the whole vampires and werewolves thing).

Twilight holds a special, yet complicated, place in my heart and this book managed to put those complicated feelings into words. I had so much fun reading Why We Love (and Hate) Twilight! Nonfiction isn’t something I gravitate to very often but this is something I can get behind! There were many moments where I laughed out loud and agreed whole heartedly with the author. I learned so much about the Twilight Universe as well. I would say that I am a casual fan of Twilight. I loved the books when I first read them as a teen and, of course, I’ve seen the movies. I’ve reread the books more than once as well as the other Twilight books Meyer has published. I just didn’t realize there were people out there analyzing and studying the Twilight Universe like it’s the Bible! It’s kind of awesome, and a little bit insane...

Like my sister, one of my favorite parts was the section about head cannon. I too thought the theory of Carlisle being the iceberg that sunk the Titanic was hilarious. But I particularly loved the example of Edward’s behavior during COVID. The thought of him and Carlisle running around town in the night giving people their vaccines (Vaccine Vigilantes) is still cracking me up! Especially the part where they have to go back later to give people their booster shot and Edward keeping track of who needs what with a very detailed spreadsheet. I want to hear more head cannon! The things people have come up with are hilarious!

I thought the book was the perfect length. It gave us a good amount of info without being overbearing. The chapters were short and grouped in a way that was easy to follow. It was engaging and, honestly, it felt like I was reading a research paper from a friend. I would love to have a conversation with the author about all things Twilight. Have any of you read The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide? I had never heard of it until now but I can’t lie, I’m one click away from buying it on Amazon. Do you recommend it? Let us know!

CONTENT RATING

LANGUAGE

2 on a scale of 1 to 5

There are a few swear words throughout the book.

VIOLENCE/GORE

3 on a scale of 1 to 5

There is some talk of war and fighting as well as a gruesome discussion of Bella’s pregnancy.  It revisits some descriptions that may have been looked over in the Twilight Saga.

SPICE

2 on a scale of 1 to 5

There are mentions of multiple male/female relationships as well as potential male/male and female/female relationships. This book discusses intimacy in a fairly clinical way, but it is discussed quite a bit, including some of the science (smience) behind it.
