Big Sister

Celaena Sardothien is Adarlan’s Assassin. After being enslaved for the last year, she is given a chance at freedom. The Prince of Adarlan wants her to come to the castle and compete against other assassins and thieves as his contender to become the King’s Champion. If she wins, she’s free and assumes the role of King’s Champion. As the competition begins, strange things start happening around the castle.
I really enjoyed this book. I feel like it didn’t take very long to understand the world and become immersed in the story. I really love Celaena’s character. She’s this unstoppable assassin who also loves girly things. She likes pretty clothes, she’s interested in boys, and she loves reading. I feel like assassins in other books are mostly unfeeling and have hardened souls, even though they are super tough and unstoppable too. It was refreshing to see a human side to her instead of just a killer. The competition was a fun part of the story, but it wasn’t the only plot. There are other things happening in the castle and it was fun to read Celaena’s point of view as she tried to put everything together and make sense of what was happening while navigating this competition she so desperately needed to win.
Little Sister

Right from the beginning of the book, I was intrigued by the storyline and I really liked how there was never a dull moment—I always needed to know what was going to happen next. It was fun to see the whole competition play out, especially Celaena’s interactions with the other competitors. I’m really picky when it comes to magic (and rules of magic) in books. It needs to be done in the right way for me to like it, but I think this was done very well. The magic was introduced pretty slowly, and I could mostly understand it. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
Middle Sister

4.5 Stars
Even though this is one of the most popular books at the moment, I had no idea what I was getting into. One would think I would read the back of the book prior to reading it, but no, I just went for it. And let me tell you this book did not disappoint! I can now say I get what all the hype is about. I loved how Celaena had more than one character trait. I feel like these days we get a lot of stories where the girl is the “girl boss” and has no other qualities/feelings. It was nice to see that yes she is an assassin but she is also an eighteen year old girl. As the sister who is not so into fantasy, this book was quite good. It wasn’t so much fantasy stuff that it was hard to keep up with, it was the perfect amount. I would say it was a sprinkle of fantasy. I do assume the fantasy is going to pick up in the next books… we shall see.

Some profanity throughout the book.
VIOLENCE/GORE

Overall this is a pretty violent book. Fair amount of fighting. Several deaths and descriptions of the bodies after being attacked by a monster of sorts.

Male/female kissing. Male/female share a bed but nothing happens.
