Jane Sharp enters the world of online sleuthing and quickly gets engrossed in a homicide case where three young college girls were stabbed to death in Idaho, with little to no evidence left behind. Jane and her online sleuthing team decide it’s their case to solve and get wrapped up more than she could have imagined into this case, crossing many moral and legal lines in the process.

I don’t even know where to start. I loved every second of this book–the way it was written (like an autobiography by Jane trying to clear her name), the online sleuthing forums (which made me have feelings about people who butt into other people’s business just because they think they can solve a case better than the cop’s can) and the overall storyline. I could not get enough of this book. Now, I will say other people who have reviewed this book took issue with it because of the similar aspects to the actual Idaho college murders, but if you read the note from the author at the very beginning of the book she lays out the cases that inspired this book and the Idaho college murders is one of them. She states that if any of the cases she took inspiration from are sensitive subjects then maybe this isn’t the book for you. That being said, this book was so good! I have never hated/rooted for a main character so much in a book. I both wanted her to fail, because let's leave the investigating to the professionals, and also wanted her to succeed, because you could tell that solving this case was something she deeply needed in her life to give her purpose.

*UPDATE* I read this book about 3ish months ago and yes, at the time I said I had no issue with it being based on the real life Idaho murders. I have now watched a couple Dateline episodes about the real murders and the recent Amazon documentary series. After watching those and realizing just how much information she used from the real case, I am kinda disturbed. I knew the basics of the case but not the gory details. Now knowing them, I am, as I said, disturbed that she blatantly copied the whole case. So yeah, now I really don’t know how I feel about the book or what I would rate it as.

I have mixed feelings on this book. First off, I have to say that the language was a problem for me, so I don’t see myself looking into any more of this author’s books. Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was fast paced and I couldn’t wait to see how it ended. I may have had to sleep with the light on one night while I was reading it, but I’m told I’m easily scared. I was surprised by the ending and really enjoyed the twist I didn’t see coming. I enjoyed the internet sleuth angle and I thought it was fun to read the character’s interactions in the online chat format.

The beginning was rough… the author straight up copied the University of Idaho murder case. And I feel like that’s wrong. You can’t just plagiarize a real-life case like that. It wasn’t like the case she wrote reminded me of the Idaho murders, it was the Idaho murder case. Down to very specific details. And that’s not right. She could have been inspired by that story (and I acknowledge that she says that in her author’s note in the beginning of the book), but seriously?!?  She could have been more creative and came up with her own case. Around page 200, the case takes a turn and is no longer an exact replica of the Idaho murders. This was the point where I really enjoyed the story. Before that point, I just felt like what I was reading was wrong. So, you understand my mixed feelings here.  I don’t read thrillers a ton, but I enjoyed the point past page 200 so I think I could enjoy more books like this if they had cleaner language. Let me know if you have any suggestions for me to try!

CONTENT RATING

LANGUAGE

5 on a scale of 1 to 5

About 28 F words throughout the whole book along with other profanity.

VIOLENCE/GORE

5 on a scale of 1 to 5

Although this book never gave me nightmares it is high up there on the violence scale, it's murder after murder. If you have no problem watching Criminal Minds or Dateline you will be fine.

SPICE

2 on a scale of 1 to 5

Multiple male/female relationships are talked about and there is some kissing. A male/male relationship is talked about.
