Arc of a Scythe #3
THE TOLL
NEAL SHUSTERMAN

4 Stars
Endura has sunk, Citra and Rowan are nowhere to be found, and Goddard has taken control. The Thunderhead has marked everyone as unsavory, ensuring nobody can communicate with it, except for one person…Greyson Tolliver.
I have loved the Arc of a Scythe series! I did enjoy this book, but I did feel that it was a little on the long side. The book is 625 pages with the first 500 pages being set up for the final 125. Don’t get me wrong there is nothing wrong with setting up a good ending, I just felt it was a little much, and at times confusing. It was jumping around to different points in time and between so many points of view you probably couldn’t even count them. I also felt that Neal Shusterman held back so much information throughout the book that you couldn’t even guess what was going to happen. Basically, every chapter was a cliffhanger that wouldn’t be addressed for another 100 pages or so. I will be honest, that did keep me engaged in the book/wanting to know what was happening. Overall, I did find it annoying to have to get through the majority of the book for all the various storylines to start coming together.
Now you might be saying to yourself, “Wow, that's a lot of complaining for a book you rated 4 stars.” Well hear me out, I still enjoyed reading this book. I thought it was a great conclusion to this story. Between what happens between Citra and Rowan, the inevitable downfall of Goddard, and Scythe Faraday’s ending. It was great! It gave me closure to these characters. Plus you have to love a book that quotes Jaws, the greatest movie of all time!
