Through her entire life, Meredith has spent a few weeks during the summer with her family on Martha’s Vineyard. But everything changed when her sister unexpectedly passed away. 18 months later, Meredith finds herself back on the island for her cousin’s wedding. She’s thrown into the ultimate game of Assassin as part of the wedding festivities and she is determined to honor her sister’s memory and win the game. Assassin was a game they played on the island every summer. Meredith forms an alliance with one of the groomsmen and she can’t help the feelings she has for him despite the fact that they just met.

I know a book is good when I choose to read instead of going to sleep at night when I’m already running low on sleep. And that’s what happened here... I was immediately sucked into this story. I may have finished it within 24 hours… I think the game of Assassin was the main driving force for me here. It was so much fun to read! I want to be in on this game! Where do I sign up? The main character’s relationship was a little too insta-lovey for me and I felt like some of their behavior was a little immature but they’re only 19 so maybe I’m just getting old… I felt like there was a little bit of depth to the story with Meredith having lost her sister and the whole family still grieving. The language was a problem for me. I don’t see myself picking up anything else by this author because of it, which is sad since I really did enjoy this story. I believe it’s considered a young adult novel, but because of the content I would say it’s more for adults. Still not sure why it’s called The Summer of Broken Rules. What rules were we breaking?
