THE REST OF THE STORY

SARAH DESSEN
Middle Sister
4/5 star rating

Emma Saylor’s summer plans get turned upside down and she ends up spending the summer with her mothers side of the family that she hasn’t seen since she was 4 years old. As she gets to know her family, she also starts to learn new things about her mother and discovers a new side to herself as well.

I quite enjoy a Sarah Dessen book and let me tell you, this one did not disappoint. Now, I will say that Sarah Dessen is known for her writing style of jumping around in time which can get confusing. I did read this one on the kindle, which at times can make it harder to adapt to the time jump because it doesn’t have the paragraph breaks a regular book has, but I still enjoyed the book and would read again.

Unlike one of my sisters, I really like MOST (there are a few I dislike quite a bit) of Sarah Dessen’s books. And this was one of the good ones. I always love how the main character is put into a new environment and has to adapt to the situation and make new friends. I love the friendships that developed between Emma Saylor, her long lost family, and her old friends/acquaintances from the lake. Of course, every moment between Emma Saylor and Roo was fantastic, but I do wish that they’d spent some more time together. This book was slightly lacking in that area compared to some of her other books. But it was still a good read.

CONTENT RATING

LANGUAGE

4 on a scale of 1 to 5

I would say there was 5-10 instances using the F word (I didn’t count), and other profanity is used minimally throughout the book.

VIOLENCE/GORE

1 on a scale of 1 to 5

No violence but this book does involving kids partying/drinking underage.

SPICE

2 on a scale of 1 to 5

Teenagers party but nothing other than kissing is discussed. There are multiple male/female relationships in this book
