THE FORGETTING

NICOLE MAGGI

Did Not Finish

Georgie wakes up after having a heart transplant, and her donor’s memories start talking over her own.

I kind of feel like I was tricked into reading this book, and maybe that’s my fault for not reading any reviews before I picked it up. It’s not at all what I thought it would be, and all of the little things just kept adding up to make bigger things I wanted no part of. I quit after 95 pages.

This book is basically about a girl who gets a heart transplant and her donor’s memories start taking over her own. Right from the start I had problems with the plot line because the girl ends up needing a heart transplant after having pneumonia for a few days. She also just happens to jump to the top of the donor list and her perfect match for a heart is right down the hall. I’m no doctor, but that seems a little bit far-fetched to me. Then the main character is going around acting like she didn’t just have major surgery. That is, until she walks up a flight of stairs. That’s difficult, but everything else, including playing the oboe for six hours straight, is fine.

Another thing that made me angry was the romance plot. Obviously, I didn’t get that far into the book, but I knew where it was going. The main character was going to fall in love with the donor’s “boyfriend” (guy she was in love with). I hate that trope. If I had any idea that might happen, I never would have picked up the book.

Where I really got tricked is that this book isn’t about a heart transplant. It’s about teenage prostitution and sex trafficking. The donor was a prostitute and the main character gets involved in trying to help other people in these situations. I do agree that it’s important to talk about these very real topics and bring awareness to them, but I don’t think I should be blindsided into reading any book with them as THE plot, let alone a YA book.
