Blonde Identity #1
THE BLONDE IDENTITY
ALLY CARTER

A woman wakes up in a snowstorm in Paris with a bump on her head. She doesn’t know who she is or how she got there. A super secret spy is also in that snowstorm. He’s looking for his partner.
As an avid fan of Ally Carter, I’m sad to say that I was pretty disappointed by this book.
The plot itself left something to be desired. The whole point was that the female main character (spoiler… Zoe) had amnesia, but I felt like the reader didn’t get enough backstory on what was going on. Especially since we were reading from both Zoe and Sawyer’s perspectives—Sawyer didn’t have amnesia. And it sort of wasn’t realistic? If we look at other spy amnesia stories like, hmm…. I don’t know, The Bourne Identity (movie) we’ll find that the main character is trying to figure out who he is. He’s, for example, figuring out where he lives. The plot would’ve made more sense to me if something like that was even considered in this book.
I was also frustrated by the unnecessary amount of F words and overall sex vibes that book was giving off. There were so many sex jokes and references as well as a somewhat descriptive leading-up-to-sex scene. As if that wasn’t enough, there was way too much focus on what Zoe was wearing at ALL times. She was forced into wearing too small dresses that her boobs were practically falling out of and barely there, see through night gowns. On top of all that, she was made out to be this “innocent” character who couldn’t put together that half the stuff she was saying and doing could be taken in a sexual way. So no, I wouldn’t necessarily say this book was full of spice. But it was very sex focused. And that’s not what I wanted.
Now that you think I hated everything about this book, let me say that I didn’t. It had some potential. The beginning was good. I felt like I got stuck in the middle, though. Zoe and Sawyer were too busy trying to be a fake newlywed couple instead of stopping the bad guys, or figuring out who she was. And… I absolutely hated Sawyer’s nickname for her. Nobody wants to be called ‘lady’ repeatedly in ANY sort of declaration of love.
I did like the ending. I felt like Zoe made some progress towards “finding” herself. Or, at least, finding confidence in herself and her choices. Of course, I liked Sawyer. Their relationship, despite the insta-love, was nice. I liked the plot twists. But again, I felt like the epilogue could have given us some more information. Questions—I have them.
So… I didn’t love this. But I do have tentative plans to read the next book in the series. We’ll see how that goes.
