Jessie’s life gets turned upside down when her father decides to elope with his secret internet girlfriend and move to LA to live with her and her son. Coming from Chicago, LA is a big change—new school, new people, and new culture. Then Jessie starts getting emails from a person calling themselves Somebody/Nobody (SN), offering to help her figure out life at Wood Valley High School.

I love an anonymous letter writing situation, and that’s exactly what I got in this book. There were a lot of sweet moments, but I can’t say this was my favorite storyline. Some of the things that Jessie and SN talked about didn’t seem very realistic and I was annoyed by all of the hashtags and acronyms. Plus, this is an email. They shouldn’t get to say, “Oh, no. I can’t believe I just told you that” in the SAME MESSAGE as what they regret saying. Just…no.

That being said, it wasn’t all bad. It was fun trying to figure out who SN was and seeing Jessie interact in real life with the possibilities of who he could be. I do think it was kind of obvious, but that doesn’t mean I’m upset with who he turned out to be. It was also nice to see Jessie form new friendships at school and work through the issues of her new family dynamics.

As for the other content in the book, I tried really hard to ignore all of the sexual jokes and overall crude nature of this book, but I felt like I couldn’t go 10 pages without something being referenced, or a full-on discussion. I get that these are teenagers and sex is a part of life, but all of this felt really unnecessary and overdone. Especially Scar’s drawn-out debate of whether she should move forward with her boyfriend as well as the talk with Agnes and Dri. They’re not the main characters—why is this relevant? Oh yeah, it’s not.

There's a male/female relationship where they kiss a few times. There are lots of discussions of sex that are quite descriptive as well as many sex jokes and other crude language. There also are mentions of a male/male relationship.
