SOMEONE IS AFTER LULU DUPREE

Lulu is convinced that someone is trying to kill her. The problem is, the cops won’t take her seriously. Lulu hires the attorney Mr. Hernandez to help save her life.

Me and this book did not get along. I feel like Josi S. Kilpack's goal with writing this book was to make you feel like you, yourself, were suffering from brain damage and had to decipher what was and wasn’t important throughout the book. Now I could just be stupid, but I felt like the transitions from important story telling and Lulu “grounding” herself back to the conversation were too intermixed and it just confused me. I found myself having to re-read multiple passages in this book to make sense of what was happening.

This book reminded me of the Geico horror movie commercial where the girl wants to get in the running car but everyone else decides that the better idea is to hide behind the chainsaws… I couldn’t tell you how many times Lulu said “Hey maybe we should call the police” and her sidekick Mr. Hernandez was like “No, they will just get in the way, we can call them later.” Like what the heck! A dead body really deserves a call to the police.

This book also seemed kinda like a love letter to Snapple. I dare say we didn’t go more than 15 pages without Snapple being referenced. I myself have never had a Snapple, so perhaps I just don’t understand the hype. I would recommend though, that you ensure your Snapple is not poisoned before drinking.

Overall, this book was a mystery, and the motivation behind the attempts at Lulu’s life was interesting. I definitely didn’t see it coming. Would I recommend this book to mystery lovers? Not necessarily… I feel like there are better mystery books out there.
