When Halcyon is found guilty of murder, her sister Evadne convinces the judge to let her serve a portion of Hal’s sentence. Eva has to spend the next 5 years as a servant in the house of Hal’s victim’s family. It will be the perfect place to figure out what actually happened.

This one was a little bit slow to start, and I think it’s because the description on the back of the book gives away what happens in the first 100 pages. I was intrigued by the storyline, but I wanted to know what happened after Hal went to work in the mine and Eva went to the commander’s house. After I got past that point, I couldn’t put the book down.

I loved Eva’s character and how she would never give up but also didn’t shy away from her flaws. The same goes for Hal, although I didn’t like her as much. This whole situation never would have happened had she not run away. And she was kind of selfish. I loved Damon and that he couldn’t help but care for Eva. I also appreciated that he had a name I could easily pronounce in my head. I’ve never been so in line with my sister and her opinions on weird words and names in fantasy before this book.

I loved the ending (with some exceptions, of course). I was a little bit worried when I was getting close to the end that everything wasn’t going to come full circle, but then it did. And it was (mostly) great. I loved how things worked out with Eva and Damon. I also really appreciate when a book can make me love a character by the end that I thoroughly despised at the beginning. That happened here. I highly recommend this one.
