Gwyneth has an abnormal family. Her grandmother goes solely by Lady Arista, her great-aunt Maddy ‘has visions,’ her aunt and cousin treat her like a red-headed step-child (although she’s actually the only member of the family without red hair), and… they all live together. Oh, one last thing I forgot—they believe certain members of the family have a ‘time travel gene.’

Funny story, this is actually one of the first audiobooks I ever listened to ‘for fun.’ When I was younger, I listened to books so I could finish them on time for book reports or other things like that. Do other people do that? Or was that just something our family did? Anyways, this book was so popular that the only copy available was an audiobook. I distinctly remember sitting in my room, headphones on and staring into space, listening to the entire trilogy. Fun times.

Because of my fond memories of the first time I read this book, I decided to give the trilogy another go, and I’m pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the story as an adult. If you’ve been with us for a while, you know that doesn’t always go well for me. Especially with young adult books. I did have to push myself to keep reading at the very beginning because I remembered a lot of it. But after the first 100 pages (or so), I couldn’t put it down. I needed to know everything about the time machine, the secret society, and the point of their ‘mission.’ I was also very fond of Gideon and Gwyneth’s enemies to not-so-much enemies vibe. And the ending…. What? Crazy! Forgot about that. I need to start the next book immediately.

I do have one other side note—I almost didn’t pick up this book, again, because I thought it might be a little bit too cult-y for me. I’ve seen pieces and parts of the movie adaptation over the years, and, if I’m remembering correctly, that portrayal of the secret society was very cult-y. And kind of made me uncomfortable. That’s not how it came across in the book. It was definitely weird (which I think it’s supposed to be), but not dark and creepy and uncomfortable. I would definitely recommend this as a more lighthearted, fun read.

It has happened people! There’s a fantasy book out there that I actually enjoyed!!! I devoured this book in under 24 hours. Good recommendation, little sister!

The whole premise of the story is so interesting it kept me hooked, and I couldn’t put it down. I NEEDED to know what was going to happen next. Trust me, I tried to do other things but all I could think about was this book! So, therefore, I HAD to read it!

Be warned, it does kinda just end. So be prepared with the second book. When you finish this one, you’re gonna want it.

I did have one issue with the story–the whole time travel thing seemed to be something that they wanted to keep hush hush, but at the same time, it seemed to be so widely accepted. So, I was just a little confused as to which we were supposed to believe. Do the regular folk believe these certain people have the ability to time travel or not?

Anyways, that’s all I have to say for now. Off to the second book for me!

Ruby Red was a fascinating story. I enjoyed the idea of an inherited time traveling gene and how that would play out among a family over time. This story was like nothing I’ve ever read before. Have any of you seen Minutemen on the Disney Channel? The whole time I was reading this, my brain kept singing “We’re time travelers, we’re time travelers.” If you haven’t seen it, check it out. You won’t regret it.

The story is fast paced and mysterious. The characters in Ruby Red were entertaining. I thought the author handled the young adult aspect of it very well. The reactions of the characters seemed realistic, if you can call it that given their situation. I loved Gwen and her best friend especially. Their sense of humor was a great part of the book. The fact that Gwen can see and talk to ghosts was odd, but fun. I could see how I would have really loved this book as a young adult, but I genuinely enjoyed reading it for the first time as an adult. It has a lot of random elements–time travel, visions, ghosts, a secret society… I’m very curious to keep reading to see how they all fit together.

The main thing I’m going to say about Ruby Red is that you shouldn’t pick it up if you aren’t willing to commit to the whole trilogy. The first book leaves a lot of unanswered questions and you’re going to want to keep reading.
