While sitting in one of her classes, Lily scribbles out a line of lyrics from her favorite obscure band on the desk. When she comes back the next day, she sees somebody else has written in the next line. Things quickly progress from filling in lyrics to anonymously writing full letters and sharing secrets.

What a wonderful anonymous letter writing situation. You know it’s one of my favorite tropes, and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Did it, at times, seem a little immature? Kind of. And did I get frustrated by some of the angsty teen energy that seemed a little bit unnecessary to me in my old age? Yes. Yes, I did. But I also let a lot of that go pretty quickly as the story progressed. I loved how Lily was obsessed with music, and I loved the funny banter between her and her pen pal. When he drew her a bowl of chicken noodle soup because he thought she was sick, it warmed my heart. If only there weren’t so many lies involved in the whole situation. By EVERYBODY.

Anyways, I also liked all of the side characters in the book. From Lily’s chaotic family (though I argue she used her ‘big family’—a family of 6 doesn’t seem so big to me—as an excuse for a lot of things) to her not perfect relationship with her best friend. They were all somewhat endearing, and I think they added a lot to the story. Overall, would recommend.
