Ryland Grace wakes up alone and confused in the middle of outer space. With only the corpses of his crewmates and a loss of memory, he has no idea why he’s on the ship. As things slowly come back to him, he realizes that Earth is in danger of extinction, and he’s the last hope for saving the planet.

Project Hail Mary was one of the best books I’ve ever read. I loved every second of it. Ryland’s sense of humor was incredibly entertaining. His humor was in every part of the story. I found myself laughing out loud several times throughout the book. There was a lot of science in the story as well. Complicated science that I know nothing about... But I loved reading it. It was fascinating. I believe the author did his research to make sure it was scientifically correct, or at least as correct as it could be. The humor weaved throughout the plot helped keep the science interesting. I was never bored while reading this book. I loved how smart Ryland was. The fact that he couldn’t help doing math just because he liked to do math was endearing. He was a very likeable character. Obviously, I was rooting for him in his efforts to save the planet, but I think I would root for him in anything he chose to do. He was just that likable.

This story was told in past and present timelines. As I read, I couldn’t help but think how perfect it was to bounce back and forth between the two. From the beginning of the story, we knew Ryland was on the spaceship alone and it was because he needed to save Earth. As we read the book, we learned a little more about how he became involved in the mission and how he ended up in space in the past timeline while simultaneously reading the present timeline where he was slowly regaining his memory and figuring things out in space. It’s genius. I loved it. I never do this, but I want to give this book 6 out of 5 stars!

I really loved this book! It was entertaining and funny. It was serious and heartbreaking. The stakes could not have been higher. I loved the way the author told the story. I loved everything about it. I’m recommending it to everyone! This is one of those books that lived up to all the hype. I highly recommend it!
