Pride and Prejudice and Zombies #1

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES

A mysterious zombie plague has fallen upon the world. Elizabeth Bennet and her sisters train to kill the undead and are distracted by the arrival of some eligible bachelors in their town.

This was hilarious and pretty much everything I wanted it to be. I’ve loved the movie for years and finally got around to reading the book–what a good choice I made.

I was surprised by the major differences between the movie and the book. Essentially, the second half of the movie completely differs from the original storyline of Pride and Prejudice. The book does not. I was pleasantly surprised by how closely this book follows Austen’s original story. It was great. I loved all of the additions of zombies and fighting mixed into the storyline. Although there were still some surprises. I gasped!

I was slightly disappointed by some of the author’s choices in what iconic quotes/moments were paraphrased instead of directly quoted. One of my favorite lines from Mr. Darcy, “My good opinion once lost is lost forever” didn’t even have its moment in the book. It was just referenced later. Sad. I was also appalled (not really) by Mr. Darcy’s many jokes about balls. What are we? 12 year old boys? The real Mr. Darcy would never.

I enjoyed the overall dark humor twist of the book. The jokes, the violence (mostly), the impolite things characters were saying, etc. However, I didn’t think the jokes made about Mr. Collins being fat were funny. All of that was just a distraction and really took away from the perfection of his original character. And, the general lack of value in human life was kinda sad–killing just to prove they could.

That being said, I recently learned that this book is part of a series. Maybe I should read the next book.
