OPEN ROAD SUMMER
EMERY LORD

4 Stars
After a series of bad choices that led to a broken wrist, Reagan decides to spend the summer becoming a better version of herself while on tour with her best friend Dee. But when Matt has to join the tour as the opening act to save Dee from some bad press, he might be a distraction from Reagan’s summer plans.
Who doesn’t love a romance where the famous musician falls in love with a regular girl? I know I do, and this one did not disappoint. I loved the friendship between Reagan and Dee, and how they were always looking out for each other no matter what. I also loved how it was supposed to be a ‘best friend summer’ but then, of course, Matt just had to join the tour. Reagan and Matt’s almost-enemies-to-lovers situation was good. I liked how they didn’t immediately get together.
This is a YA book so I was expecting it to be sappy and “philosophical” and angsty. It definitely was. And I think I liked Reagan’s character a lot more when I was an angsty teenager. She’s rebellious and thinks everyone’s out to get her, and that didn’t really change throughout the book. I would have loved to have seen some character development there. I also thought that Matt’s flirting could be, for lack of a better word, cringy at times. I absolutely hate the fact that he wrote a song about Reagan and every other word was ‘girl.’
“Do you want me to beg you?
Do you want me to say please?
Then this song is the rest of my pride, girl.
This song is me down on my knees.
Just give in, give in to me, girl.
I’ll give you everything I’ve got.
I won’t give up, give up on you, girl,
Till you’re giving me a shot.”
I love books. I love music. And I’m not saying that authors can’t be musicians, but I have a really hard time taking that seriously. Dare I say, it detracted from the reading experience. And that song was the worst because I hate it when a guy calls his partner girl. But also, it’s not rhyming when you just use the same word over and over again. Where’s Eminem? If he can find a word that rhymes with orange, how hard can it be to find a word that rhymes with girl?
Be not confused, I really did enjoy this book. I just had to look past all that.
