Dr. Jonas Taylor left his life of deep-sea diving for paleontological research after an incident 7 years ago. Now his former associates need his help with a Mariana Trench dive.

As a lover of the movie adaptation of this book, I was very surprised by the majority of the storyline. And I’m not really upset about that. I will always argue that one should watch the movie before reading the book in order to be able to enjoy the two stories separately and not be disappointed by the movie. That worked out for me here. And I enjoyed reading the book even though it was completely different from the movie.

The beginning of the book was a little bit slow to me. I had to push all of my assumptions of the story out of the way and relearn who Jonas was as he was being introduced to me (he’s no Jason Statham). It also took a while for me to get used to all of the scientific talk and for the action to start picking up pace. But once it did, it didn’t stop, and I had a hard time putting this book down. It was all so crazy and ridiculous and I couldn’t help cheering on Jonas’s plan while the other idiots were trying to get in his way. I also liked how the Navy, the government, and news stations got involved in trying to stop the meg. I feel like that’s a pretty realistic assumption, and the chaos was entertaining. And if I was cheering for a certain character’s demise, I hope that doesn’t make me a bad person.

I absolutely loved the ending. It was insane. I thought to myself, ‘Please do it. Please.’ But I didn’t really think he was gonna do it. He did it! Was it gross? Yeah. Did I love it? Yeah.
