Caraval #2

LEGENDARY

STEPHANIE GARBER
Little Sister

After everything worked out in her favor at the end of Caraval, Tella should be happier than ever, but she still owes the mysterious criminal who helped her make it all happen. Now Tella has to play in the next Caraval and figure out Legend’s real name in order to pay her debts, save her mom, and ultimately save herself.

Right when I thought I had the game figured out, everything changed. All the rules from the last Caraval didn’t apply here, and it was fun to see everything play out in what felt like (but wasn’t) a less formal/structured game throughout the city. I loved all the little moments between Tella and Dante, and hated everything between Tella and Jacks. The introduction of the fates to this story took everything to another level. It almost put the game players and the game makers on the same team, where it didn’t feel like that was the case in the last book. I didn’t love Legendary as much as I loved Caraval, but only because, at the time, Caraval felt like a nice wrap up to Scarlett and Julian’s story, but Legendary leaves Tella’s story wide open.

Legendary was such a great book! I loved every second of it. We follow Tella as she plays another round of Caraval. The stakes are high and Tella is doing all she can to rescue someone she loves. I couldn’t read the pages of this book fast enough. There were so many gasp worthy moments! We’d get these little puzzle pieces throughout the story and they fit so well together in the end. The plot was very well thought out. I loved the mystery of our characters. I loved the objective of the game this time around. I just loved it all! If you read my review for Caraval, you know I struggled with it a little bit. I felt confused about the game for the majority of the story, but I didn’t feel that way at all with Legendary. Unlike my sister, I found myself rooting for both Dante and Jacks… Who doesn’t enjoy a good love triangle? But I do agree with my sister that adding the fates to the story took it to the next level. Their magical powers and the influence they could have over their world changed the game. I enjoyed the open end to this story–cliffhangers are so exciting!  I can’t wait to see what happens next!
