Annabelle used to have everything—popularity, friends, and a stable home life. She used to be the girl that everybody else wanted to be. But one night changed everything. Now the new school year is beginning, and Annabelle has to try to face what happened on her own. That is, until she meets Owen, a music obsessed, radical truth telling, reformed bad boy.
Beautiful. Just beautiful. I love this book! I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve read it, I love it that much. I didn’t realize how much I quote this book on a daily basis until I was rereading it and marking quotes. It’s definitely in my top 5 all-time favorites.
The story is amazing. I loved learning about Annabelle’s modeling and Owen’s music and how their two worlds collided. I loved how they learned so much from each other and really paid attention to what the other person was saying. The number of times they referenced/quoted their previous conversations, even their first conversation, just shows how much they care about each other.
I loved all the drama within Anabelle’s family and her struggle to try to make life easier for everybody else. And although I may not be enlightened, Owen’s approach to music is inspirational. I also couldn’t get enough of his radical honesty and anger management references. It’s all so weird. And random. But… it works.
All of the characters were amazing. Not just Anabelle and Owen, but their family and friends too. Especially Owen’s little sister, Mallory. She was so sweet and funny. And I loved that we got to see how they all affected each other’s lives.
This book does have a lot of time jumps and backstory that may seem a little drawn out (especially compared to the beautiful moments between Annabelle and Owen), but it pulls the whole story together. It’s so necessary in piecing together all the metaphors and deeper meanings. This is so much more than just a romance. It’s light hearted and funny, but also deep and tragic. Do yourself a favor, and go read it.

I love this book! I love Owen! I mean who wouldn’t? As my dear little sister mentioned, she does in fact quote this book all the time. And she is quoting it to me! I can’t tell you how many times she has put music on my phone and then informed me that I need to listen to it and then, when I am ready, she will give me more. Or she will be telling me about an album she just bought, and then proceed to tell me that I am not “ready” for it yet or dare I say "enlightened" enough for it. Needless to say, she is my music guru. The day I started talking to her about Twenty One Pilots was a great day in her life because, apparently, she had been waiting for me to be ready for their greatness.
This book does have some pretty serious underlying themes such as eating disorders and sexual assault, but they don’t overpower the story, if that makes sense. The theme is there and important but, while reading I didn’t feel bogged down by the issues each character was dealing with. There have been some books that I have read recently with serious themes such as these and I felt an unease as I was reading, making the book less enjoyable. I feel like Sarah Dessen has the right amount of seriousness and happiness to make her stories flow.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a romance where everything isn’t always happy go lucky.

Just Listen is a young adult novel that focuses on some very heavy topics. Over the course of the book, we get to know Annabel and come to understand how she went from being one of the popular girls at her school to being a loner. Owen is a loner as well, and the two of them develop a bit of loner comradery. I think we all loved Owen. He’s the troubled guy who everyone thinks they know, but really have no idea who he is. His obsession with music was intense! For the most part, I really loved his character. I would argue that he could have/should have done more to resolve the third act breakup, but I can see how that would have changed the main character’s breakthrough in the end.
This book was thought provoking. The glass house metaphor was a very interesting component to the story. There were several serious themes that the author tackled in this book and I feel like she handled them all well. The ending was very well done. I’m feeling a little conflicted about my review. On the one hand, I was curious about many unanswered questions in this story while I was reading, and that kept me going, but I didn’t love it. I won’t read this book again. I felt like there was a whole lot of nothing happening. On the other hand, I would argue that this book is a work of art. It was well written, with important topics discussed, meaningful life lessons, leaving the reader inspired in a number of ways. Just Listen wasn’t really my cup of tea. But I can understand why my sisters loved it.
