HOW TO KEEP ROLLING AFTER A FALL

After a cyberbullying incident, Nikki Baylor is expelled from her school, abandoned by her friends, and sentenced to some hours of community service. While fulfilling those hours, Nikki runs into Pax, a wheelchair ruby player, who helps her understand that everybody deserves a second chance.
I like this book. A lot. I really love when authors look at situations from a different perspective than most people do. It would have been really easy to write this book about the girl who was cyberbullied instead of one of the girls who did the cyberbullying. But instead, this book wasn’t about trying to forgive someone else but trying to forgive yourself. It’s refreshing to read about a character who isn’t full of herself, acknowledges her very real problems, and is going through the process of trying to better herself. Nikki isn’t a flawless character, she makes more mistakes as the book goes on, but it’s okay… because it’s real.
I love Pax. It was interesting reading about someone in a wheelchair, since that’s not something I’m super familiar with. I loved his sense of humor and brutal honesty. And I loved his and Nikki’s relationship. He wasn’t a placeholder for her or her last resort since she had been abandoned by everybody else. She liked him. When they first met, there was a little bit of awkwardness in the “don’t say the wrong thing to the boy in the wheelchair” type way. But it didn’t last long, and Nikki never thought Pax was incapable of anything. They had their ups and downs like any relationship, and it was great.

I thought that this book was quite adorable but in the ‘world is not always happy go lucky’ kind of way. I quite enjoy books that branch out and do something you don’t see all that often. Such as how the main girl was the bully instead of being bullied, and how the boy had also made a mistake that ended up putting him in a wheelchair. I quite enjoyed how they had the main girl end up becoming friends with a girl who had been bullied. That relationship helped her to be able to grow and learn what kind of person she really wanted to be. I did kinda hate the main girl's parents in this book–I feel like they never really gave her a chance to tell her side of the story/let her apologize and move on from what she had done. I would definitely recommend this book especially to anyone who likes books where everything isn’t always ‘happy go lucky.’ I am definitely going to check out more books by Karole Cozzo.

CONTENT RATING
LANGUAGE

There’s swearing throughout the book as well as some crude references/jokes. A game of never have I ever gets a little disturbing. No F words.
VIOLENCE/GORE

There are mentions of bullying.
SPICE

There’s a male/female relationship where the couple frequently makes out and gets a little handsy. There are some very vague discussions on how Pax’s injury affects his body. And very vague proof that things are working just fine.
