After Grace loses her parents, she has to go live with her uncle and cousin in Alaska at Katmere Academy Boarding School. She immediately recognizes that this is no ordinary boarding school with its divided factions and air of hostility towards her.

The writing style of this book is kind of interesting. It’s almost like we’re getting Grace’s entire stream of consciousness and it can be a little repetitive and slightly annoying. Despite this book taking place over a very short period of time, there’s definitely a lot of action that makes you want to keep reading. But it’s kind of ridiculous that Grace didn’t figure out about the vampires and other paranormal creatures until over half way through the book. And it’s written on the back of the book!

About 3/4s of the way through the book, I got a little bit frustrated and fed up with it. Grace was being particularly annoying, and then in the middle of an important conversation with Jaxon, she wouldn’t stop making out with him. They’d talk for two seconds and then go back at it, on repeat. It went on for like 5 chapters (short chapters, but still…) it was making me mad. Once I finally got past that, the ending was crazy. Crazy good. I called a few things from the beginning of the book, but definitely not the whole situation.

After everything, am I going to immediately order the next book? No. Will I check to see if it’s available at my library though? Yeah. I’m gonna give it a chance, but I kind of want more from it than I got here.

CONTENT RATING

LANGUAGE

5 on a scale of 1 to 5

There was quite a bit of profanity throughout the book, included 20 ish F words. Keep in mind this book is over 500 pages. I felt like there would be 50-100 pages without any swear words and then 10 with quite a few. There were also a few crude jokes that I really could have done without.

VIOLENCE/GORE

5 on a scale of 1 to 5

There was some descriptive fighting and killing with lots of blood. There is also a pretty disturbing human sacrifice situation.

SPICE

4 on a scale of 1 to 5

There are a few male/female relationships throughout the book. There are some descriptive makeout scenes and insinuation of wanting to and having gone further.
