Stars, Stripes, and Hockey Nights #4

AT THE TWILIGHT'S LAST GLEAMING

After lying to the press about having a girlfriend, Jake Twiles must work with a PR representative to smooth things over. The last thing he expected was to walk into that office and find the woman he eloped with 10 years ago–the woman he's technically still married to.

This was an adorable addition to the Stars, Stripes, and Hockey Nights series! I was thoroughly entertained. This book was super fast paced and I blew through it in under 48 hours!

The banter between our two main characters was adorable and hilarious. I really enjoyed their little anonymous texting situation. But, it did make me wonder why both of them changed their phone numbers at some point after their wedding… Do people do that often? I’ve had the same phone number my entire adult life.

In the part of the book before the book actually starts (I forget what that’s called, sue me), the author mentions that she loves Twilight and put Twilight references throughout the book. Well, the only one I noticed was that his last name is Twiles… Now, I am no die hard twi-hard, but I felt like I should have noticed more. So if you read this book and find more, let me know. I’m curious.

One could argue that the whole ‘we got married ten years ago but haven’t seen or talked to each other since thing’ is a bit odd. And, you wouldn’t be wrong. I just decided in my mind to chalk it up to them being idiot kids who didn’t know what they wanted but were both still in love with each other which is why no one initiated a divorce. Therefore, I was able to enjoy this adorable book while some (my sisters) may get caught up on that and let it ruin the whole book.

Anywho, I loved this book and highly recommend it as a cute, clean romance!

As much as I hate to say it, I did not like this book. The story didn't work for me. At the Twilight's Last Gleaming is about Izzy and Jake. Jake is an NHL superstar and gold medal Olympian participating in the Stars and Stripes Hockey Tournament in Washington, D.C. Izzy works in PR, but really wants to devote her time to her side business creating culinary experiences. Jake and Izzy eloped when they were 18, but ended up going their separate ways.

In short, my issues with the story are:

  1. I don't understand why their marriage failed.

  2. The anonymous texting seemed wrong at times.

  3. Chaotic scenes with too many teammates.

  4. Several inconsistencies in the writing.

I couldn't feel bad about their failed marriage when I still have no idea why things didn't work out between them initially. They pined for each other for ten years! They never had any interest in anyone else. If they missed each other so much, why did they separate? I found their past confusing in general. Izzy didn't make any sense to me. She loved theater in high school but changed her degree in college. After a brief stint as a culinary social media influencer, she ended up working at a PR firm... I had no sympathy for their worries about their relationship failing again because I don't understand them. I couldn't connect to them.

Their anonymous texting relationship was a cute idea, but it didn't work for me. I was bugged that they often texted while in each other's presence. If they truly had strong feelings for each other, they wouldn't have been thinking about their 'anonymous texting buddy.'

The scenes with the other hockey players were chaotic. Too many players were named in short conversations. Naming several players in a scene where they are playing hockey makes sense, but even then, it felt chaotic. Sometimes they were referred to by their first name only, sometimes by their last name only, and sometimes by their first and last names. It was too hard to keep up. And I'm familiar with some of the other players involved in the story. It was too messy.

I also struggled with the writing. Honestly, it seems like the author rushed through it. I read an ARC, so some things may have been edited, but there were a lot of inconsistencies in the story. I wasn’t impressed.

After reading the author’s note at the beginning of the book about hidden Twilight easter eggs, I’m sad to say I really didn’t find that many of them. And as someone who’s read Twilight a fair number of times (one of them fairly recently), I’m slightly confused.

Anyways, this was a good book. Was I frustrated by the miscommunications/hidden feelings between Izzy and Jake the entire time? Yes. Was I entirely too worried about their tax fraud? Yes. Did I have some issues with their text relationship at times? Yes. Do I wish we got more backstory on their history and what went wrong with the relationship 10 years ago? Yes. Yes, I do. But, overall, I had a good time reading this book. It was cute, it was funny, and I didn’t mind the dog most of the time.
