Big Sister

5 Stars
Evie relies on her job to help take care of her younger sister and ailing father. After losing her job, she has an opportunity to work for the mysterious man her village knows only as ‘The Villain.’
I loved this book! The word that comes to mind to describe the author’s writing is ‘quirky.’ The moment I started reading, I was hooked. I was so intrigued by the characters and the imagery, and that intrigue carried throughout the whole story. How was it that I was reading a story about a Villain, doing villainous and evil things, yet it felt so cozy? In my head, the village and castle were the perfect place for a fairy tale. The scenery especially made me think of ‘Tangled.’ The map in the beginning of the book was a really fun element to the book. I loved the characters, it was fast paced, and the mystery of the story kept me guessing the whole way through. There was a major twist at the end that I didn’t see coming! And a cliff hanger to finish the book. There is a ‘pet’ frog named Kingsley and he instantly became my favorite! Don’t mind me… I’m just over here on Etsy shopping for Kingsley merchandise… There is quite a bit of language in this story that is usually a deal breaker for me, but I was so interested in the story from the very beginning I found myself ‘looking the other way.’ There are 14 F words in this book so I would not call it a clean read by my standards when it comes to language. As far as the spice goes, I gave it a 3/5 so I would say that aspect was clean.
Little Sister

4.5 Stars
I really didn’t know anything about this book going into it other than it came very highly recommended from my sister (who aggressively forced it to the top of my TBR list). But I can’t complain; it was a very good, funny read. Am I as obsessed with it as my sister? No, but it was still really good. It was nice to read from the perspective of a morally gray bad guy who wasn’t claiming to be the good guy. I thoroughly enjoyed rooting for the villain and his assistant in their devious plans to ruin the king. I do have one question though—why can’t Kingsley (the frog) spell ‘help’ correctly when all of his other signs are spelled right? Am I missing something?
