Rune returns from his native country of Norway after two years away from the home he grew up in, and the girl who lived next door. He can’t understand why she went silent after promising to wait for him.

I was in the mood for a good cry and after seeing this book pop up all over the internet, I was excited to read it. After 35 pages, I decided to quit. I’ll explain my reasoning pretty bluntly here–I didn’t make it very far into the book so I don’t think I can really spoil anything, but if you don’t want any details, here’s your warning. POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD! Rune and Poppy become best friends when Rune moves from Norway. They’re next door neighbors. And 5 years old. The second scene in the book is Poppy being brought home from school to say goodbye to her grandma who seems to be on hospice. Her grandma gives her a jar of 1000 paper hearts and tells her to collect her best ‘boy kisses’ by writing down the moment on one of the little hearts in the jar. It’s a sweet idea, I guess. Her grandmother’s favorite memories are of the kisses her husband gave her so it’s meaningful to her. But Poppy is 8 years old… so Poppy leaves her house while her grandma passes and is basically ready to get started kissing boys right then and there because her grandma told her it would be her next adventure. Rune doesn’t want her kissing any other boys because they are best friends. So he kisses her. They’re 8!!! We skip ahead to them being 15 years old. They are boyfriend and girlfriend. And apparently Rune sneaks into Poppy’s bedroom to sleep in her bed with her every night. And they’ve been doing that since they were 12. The book mentions how it’s getting harder and harder to stop kissing and how they want more but they realize they’re too young. The whole set up was too much. They are way too young for any of that. It all seemed so wrong. There was also a fair amount of swearing for the small amount that I read.
