Cursebreakers #1
A CURSE SO DARK AND LONELY
BRIGID KEMMERER

Harper’s just your average teenage girl. Except her mother’s dying, her father abandoned them, and her brother is trying his best to repay the shady loans their father left behind. Then an act of kindness and bravery gets her accidently thrown into an alternate world with a cursed prince she’s supposed to fall in love with and a kingdom she’s supposed to help save.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was a fun twist on Beauty and the Beast, and I just love Rhen. I’m a sucker for a man who’s made mistakes but is doing everything in his power to try to make up for it. He’s been tormented by repeating the same season over and over again because no girl has broken the curse. It turns out it might take a completely different type of girl for him to have a chance.
I liked Harper, but I also had my moments where I was screaming at her, “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?” She changed so much from the beginning of the book to the end, which I loved. She started out thinking she was some helpless teenage girl because that’s all she’d ever been treated as, but she learned she could do so much more. And she was so much stronger than she thought. That being said, I think she was really slow in trusting Rhen (and this is coming from somebody who loves a slow burn romance), and would take one step forward and five steps back at the worst possible moments. She was very stubborn in her mindset and always thought she was right when she really didn’t know much about what she was talking about. Rhen also had his faults and his stubbornness, but I felt like he was quicker to compromise and look at things from her point of view. Sometimes she just seemed like she was doing everything she could to undermine him in front of his people…rude.
I absolutely hate how this book halfway tried to be a love triangle towards the end. No! That’s not what this is, and that is not okay. This isn’t a fight between Rhen and Grey. I think Grey’s character had so much potential, and I loved him for a good portion of the book. His loyalty and friendship towards Rhen, and then later, Harper, was the best thing about him. Any insinuation that he would try to “win over” Harper from Rhen was just uncalled for.
This is a reread of the series for me, so I can already tell you that this is my favorite book out of the three (we’ll see if that changes, but I highly doubt it). I really didn’t love the second book, but, that being said, I’m still gonna have to go read it again…
